Synopsis

Mabel Normand’s story is one of brilliance, resilience, and betrayal. Rising from humble beginnings to become Hollywood's first female screenwriter, producer, and director, Mabel dared to control her creative destiny. At the height of her career, she launched the Mabel Normand Feature Film Company and delivered one of the biggest box-office hits of the silent era with *Mickey* (1918). But her independence and influence came at a cost — a brutal backlash from powerful men who saw her as a threat.
When beloved director William Desmond Taylor was murdered in 1922, Mabel — a frequent visitor to his home — was dragged into the scandal. Headlines painted her as a dangerous femme fatale, and powerful studio rivals exploited the frenzy to push her out of the industry. Though never charged, the damage to her career and reputation was irreversible.
Mabel's extraordinary - true story - deserves a rightful place in history. Her story shines a light on her strong family ties, price of ambition and the fight for survival in the Golden Age of Hollywood.

Mabel Normand was a comic star of silent films who appeared in over 250 films between the years 1910-1927. She co-starred with Charlie Chaplin and Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle in a number of successful films, and was considered the greatest comic actress of her era. Off screen she wrote and directed many of her films in the movie studio and production company "Mabel Normand Feature Film Co." she built in the late 1910s.
Mickey became the highest-grossing feature film of 1918, with an estimated 41.8 million tickets sold by 1921, a record that stood until 1938. The film's success was significant, as it grossed $8 million (equivalent to over $200 million in 2020 inflation).
